POSTER - SENTENCES ON CONCEPTUAL ART

During her Graphic Design Studio course at CCA, Leah undertook a project centered around creating posters that focus on one of LeWitt's sentences. Due to the limited time frame, the project necessitated working swiftly, emphasizing broader conceptual moves over minute formal details. The project consisted of two rounds: the first round involved designing a poster with a single image or layout, and the second round required combining the two.

Leah chose the sentence: "The process is mechanical and should not be tampered with. It should run its course." She interprets this phrase as an exploration of the nature of mechanical processes in everyday life, their underlying rules and orders, and the effects of challenging those rules.

To make the concept more accessible, Leah employs a simple yet effective approach. She uses the example of a faucet to illustrate the idea, depicting the process of running water as a simple, everyday, and mechanical phenomenon. The water column forms naturally under the influence of gravity. When people wash items beneath the water column, obstacles disrupt the flow, causing the water column to break apart and splash. This phenomenon symbolizes the challenge to rules and demonstrates the potential chaos and destruction that can arise when order is disrupted.

Leah was trying to convey the complex relationship between rules, order, and innovation, inviting viewers to contemplate the delicate balance between adhering to structure and embracing creative disruption.
